Closet Questions?

TALK TO AN EXPERT

Do you waste time every morning trying to find things in your closet? Maybe it’s that special top you wear for an important business meeting or a pair of shoes you haven’t worn in months that's now buried somewhere on the floor. If this sounds like you, then it’s time for an organization plan.

Luckily, creating an organization solution doesn’t have to be difficult. Here at Modular Closets, we not only offer luxurious closet systems at an affordable price thanks to our simple modular approach to custom closets, but we also specialize in home organization strategies that make it easy to live a more organized life.

If you’re looking to start creating a more functional closet, try out this 4-part organization plan:

1. Tops

There are many approaches to organizing tops. Some people prefer to arrange by color or season. However, your main objective should be maximizing your available closet space.

A great way to do this is by determining what needs to be folded and what should be hung. Generally, cotton items like t-shirts and sportswear are best folded and stacked on shelves. Dress shirts, blouses, jackets, and coats are best hung on multiple rods, allowing you to make full use of closet space with rows of short-length items.

Need help designing your closet layout to fit your wardrobe? Modular Closets can help ensure your space is used efficiently!

2. Slacks & Skirts

When it comes to slacks, some people prefer to fold items like jeans, while others like to hang everything.

You have options for hanging slacks: fold them over a hanger or hang them from the bottom cuff to avoid wrinkling. Depending on your wardrobe, you may want multiple rows of hanging rods or more shelves for long items to hang freely. A similar approach works for skirts and dresses. Multiple hanging rods are ideal for shorter items, while longer items need space to hang properly.

3. Shoes

For shoe collections, there are various organizational solutions to consider.

Small cubbies work well for sandals and flats, allowing for efficient stacking to save space. Designer footwear might look best displayed on open shelves, while boots often fit well on the closet floor. Use wall space when possible, and avoid overcrowding by selectively storing only a few pairs on the floor.

4. Accessories

In a well-organized closet, drawers—often with dividers—are ideal for storing accessories.

Compactly folded lingerie, socks, and hosiery can be organized by category, such as dressy vs. casual or warm vs. cold weather items. Jewelry and watches are often best stored in drawers with velvet-lined inserts, making it easy to see everything. Tie racks and rods are excellent for organizing ties and belts.

The first step to organizing your closet is assessing your space and determining what you need to store. With this information, a closet designer can help you create a custom solution. At Modular Closets, we’d like to offer you this design process for free to ensure you get the best closet system possible.
